Episode: Connections with Eric Cocks: Sam Phillips Interview plus new and vintage music

Dec 2, 2016 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. Starts with an interview with singer and songwriter Sam Phillips and continues with new and vintage music.

Sam has a terrific new ep, Human Contact Is Never Easy, and has recently completed her score for the Netflix revival of Gilmore Girls. In a very informal conversation, we talk about writing, recording and producing the album (which includes contributions from multi-talented and multi-instrumentalist Eric Gorfain, drummer Jay Bellerose, bass player Jennifer Condos and The Section Quartet).

Sam goes into details on the writing and recording process for the new ep and the Gilmore Girls score. Also thoughts on art, independently releasing music on her own label, why she writes music, producing her own records and playing drums. Plus conversations about drummer Jim Keltner, Bob Dylan and musician/producer Steve Addabbo.

We also talk about a new upcoming album by Sam for 2017. Plus two live recordings on the ep, Reflecting Light and If I Could Write, the first live recordings Sam has ever released. Both are from a planned live film and record of intimate performances at Largo at the Coronet in LA.

There's plenty of music from the new ep throughout the interview, along with earlier work from Push Any Button, Martinis and Bikinins, Fan Dance, Don't Do Anything and the rare Omnipop, along with great stories and terrific humor.

The new album and further info is available on Sam's website:

After the interview, the show continues with new, vintage and newly released music by The Shacks, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, a rare Alan Menken demo from his new hit Broadway musical, A Bronx Tale and whatever happened in the moment, including very spontaneous comedy.
