Episode: 02.05.24: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses the Trump-GOP Threat to Democracy; Escalating Middle East Conflict linked to Israel's Brutal Gaza War; CT For All Launches 2024 Equity Agenda; Far Right Forces Generating Emergency at Southern Border

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 – 9:30 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Jeff Sharlet, New York Times best-selling author, the Frederick Sessions Beebe ’35 Professor in the Art of Writing at Dartmouth College, and a contributing editor at Vanity Fair, discusses his concern about the rising extremism, violence and fascist ideology surrounding Donald Trump and his MAGA movement, aspects of which are examined in his book, "The Undertow: Scenes from a Slow Civil War."

2) Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Code Pink Women For Peace, discusses the recent article she co-wrote with Nicolas Davies titled, "Biden Must Choose Between a Ceasefire in Gaza and a Regional War," and growing concern about a wider Middle East war, given the recent drone attack resulting in the deaths of three US service members and 25 others injured in Jordan, and the Biden administration launch of retaliatory airstrikes on armed groups in the region backed by Iran.

3) Norma Martinez-HoSang, organizing director with Connecticut For All, a statewide coalition of labor, community, and faith organizations representing hundreds of thousands of people, whose mission is to eliminate systemic inequalities and rebuild a better Connecticut, talks about their 2024 Equity Agenda which will be launched at the CT Capitol's Legislative Office Building (LOB) the next day, Feb. 6th -- as well as other issues coalition partners are prioritizing in this year's state legislative session.

4) Justin Akers Chacón, Professor of U.S. History and Chicano Studies San Diego City College, talks about his recent article, "Far Right Forces Are Attempting to Generate a National Emergency at the Border," and the increasing threat of violence with the arrival of the so called "God's Army" of far right Christian nationalists, and 24 Republican governors answering Donald Trump's call to support Texas GOP Gov. Abbott, by sending National Guard troops and law enforcement officers from their states to the southern border in Texas.
