Episode: Connections: Newly released David Bowie. Dylan, Beatles, Elvis plus new and vintage music

Jan 7, 2022 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. It’s spontaneous! It’s non-linear!! New and vintage music including a deep exploration of the brand new David Bowie album, Toy: Box, produced by his friend and band mate, Mark Plati. The project started in 2000 around the time of Bowie’s appearance at Glastonbury, when he decided to revisit some songs he had written in the 1960’s and approach them from a new angle. The idea was to record them quickly with his touring band in one or two takes, with a minimum of overdubs, using the kind of sound they were already enjoying on tour.

The sessions included Earl Slick and producer Mark Plati on guitars, Gail Anne Dorsey on bass, Sterling Campbell on drums, Mike Garson on keyboards and Martha Mooke on violin, amongst others, with some of the arrangements by Tony Visconti. For the most part, David sang his vocals all the way through, going for the performance, rather than editing multiple takes.

The results are outstanding!!!

CD2 of the box set features alternate mixes of the full band at peak power. CD3 focuses on acoustic versions with “Unplugged and Somewhat Slightly Dazed Electric Mixes” that are totally amazing!!!

The show also includes music by Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Byrds, Cocteau Twins, The Rolling Stones, Benny Spellman covering Allen Toussaint, The Yardbirds, Donovan, Buzzy Linhart, The Doors, Carla & Rufus Thomas, rarities from The Beach Boys Feel Flows box set, The Merry Go Round with Emitt Rhodes and more.

Also new music by Elvis Costello & The Imposters, Aimee Mann, Nell Smith & The Flaming Lips, Beach House, Mitski, Maita, The Squeaky Chairs, The Yodel Ladies and whatever happened in the moment.

Thanks for tuning in!!
