Episode: Connections: Dylan 1970 plus new and vintage music

March 5, 2021 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. It’s spontaneous! It’s non-linear!! A deep exploration of the newly released three cd Bob Dylan album, Dylan 1970, including rare recordings with his friend George Harrison, early takes of future album tracks, rehearsals, spontaneous covers and much more. Plus new and vintage music interspersed with Dylan sets throughout the show, along with three Pete Townshend demos from the upcoming Super Deluxe box set of The Who Sell Out.

Includes The Rolling Stones, Alex Chilton, Mose Allison, The Nazz, The Juliana Hatfield Three, Sonny Bono, The Beach Boys, Marty Stuart covering The Who, Colonel Jubilation P. Johnston and His Mystic Knights Band & Street Singers (Dylan producer Bob Johnston using the same musicians he used on Blonde on Blonde to have some laughs doing covers) and more.

Also new music by James Combs, Willie Nelson, Dr. Lonnie Smith with Iggy Pop, Aaron Frazer, Dry Cleaning, Chet Faker, Ingrid Andress, Purple Mountains, Thomas Dybdahl, a classic jingle by producer David Lucas with Stella Soulé, The Squeaky Chairs, Further Adieu and whatever happened in the moment.

Plus brief tributes to Henry Goldrich, owner of the legendary Manny’s Music in NYC and a tribute to Zak Nilsson, son of Harry Nilsson.

The Dylan music gives wonderful insight to some of his working methods for coming up with new ideas and a new sound in 1970, leading to Self Portrait and New Morning. He tries out sounds and styles with his own music, folk songs and surprise covers. It’s a blast hear how much fun everybody was having doing a Jay & The Americans song! He works with superb musicians, including Al Kooper, Russ Kunkel, Charlie Daniels, David Bromberg, Harvey Brooks, Buzzy Feiten, Ron Cornelius and of course, future Wilbury, George Harrison. This release opens up a new way of understating Dylan’s work on Self Portrait, New Morning and well beyond. His willingness  to experiment and take chances would continue. And most of all, it sounds great!!
