Episode: Connections: Beatles Sgt Pepper Outtakes and New Mixes, plus new and vintage music

May 26, 2017 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks, filling in for my good friend Chris Frantz the Talking Head. Starts with 25 minutes of previously unreleased first takes and early takes from the Sgt Pepper sessions in high quality audio, followed by new and vintage music, plus further explorations of these sessions and the new stereo remixes by Giles Martin.

When The Beatles started these sessions, after a decision to give up touring, John Lennon told George Martin they wanted to create sounds that had never been heard before. The Beatles and George Martin succeeded. And it sounds like they were having great fun in these sessions, even in the basic tracks, before overdubs were added.

The show moves on to new and vintage music, including Bob Dylan, Alex Chilton, Bo Diddley, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, Jackie DeShannon, Donovan, Mott The Hoople, The Ronettes, Hillary Bratton and The Beach Boys with a rare Dennis Wilson song.

Also new music by Ray Davies, Willie Nelson, Chris Price, Aimee Mann with The Section Quartet, Gary Calamar, Emily Duff, Angel Olsen, Louis Schefano, Risa Hall, Joy Askew, Victor Krummenacher, Kelley Ryan, Elohim, Cait Brennan, Nikki Lane, The Inside Jokes, The Squeaky Chairs and whatever happened in the moment.

Sgt Pepper outtakes and remixes reappear throughout the show.

Btw, it didn't occur to me at the time: The very first time I heard Sgt Pepper was a radio premiere of the album. Some of the tracks in this show were also radio premieres. It's enormous fun to explore these new releases and hear them in a new context. It's also great fun to explore new music.

Thanks for tuning in!
