Episode: Connections: Blonde On Blonde and Pet Sounds Outtakes, Plus New and Vintage Music

May 20, 2016 episode of Connections on WPKN with Eric Cocks. New and vintage music, plus a 50th Anniversary celebration of the May 16, 1966 release of Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde and Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys.

The show includes rare outtakes, first takes and works in progress from Brian Wilson and Bob Dylan. To me, it's fascinating to hear the way they tried different ideas with the musicians they recorded with. Both Bob and Brian trusted their instincts on where to go next, and when to follow a path that another musician suggested, even by accident. These tracks give a real feel of what it must have been like to be in the studio when this music was created. I'm really glad that the outtakes were saved, both for the joy of hearing them and for historical reasons.

Brian was directly inspired by The Beatles Rubber Soul album. Bob was at a creative peak, continuing the brilliant work of Bringing It All Back Home and Highway 61, recorded in the previous year and a half. Both were in their early twenties and knew how to make their ideas into reality.

The show also includes music from the same time period, including Revolver by The Beatles, music from The Who, The Standells, The Animals, The Monkees, The Hollies and The T-Bones (by the same studio musicians on Pet Sounds). Also a rare demo by Pete Ham, turned into a hit song by Badfinger.

Plus new music from Xeno & Oaklander, Mudcrutch (featuring Tom Petty), Steve Addabbo (who engineered the Dylan remixes on Cutting Edge, heard in this show), Andy Shauf, The Monkees and more.

And… music from Margo Price, Thievery Corporation, Paper Pilots, Random Glitches, Mike Raphone of The Squeaky Chairs and whatever happened in the moment.

There were also some surprises… generating opportunities for spontaneous humor.

Thanks for tuning in!
