Episode: 05.20.19: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses the arrest of 4 occupiers in Venezuela's US Embassy; The risk of US war with Iran; Why new abortion restrictions disproportionately impact women of color & Public option health insurance proposed for CT

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 - 10:00 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Adrienne Pine, Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology at American University recounts her experience as a member of the Embassy Protection Collective, the forced police entry into Venezuela's U.S. Embassy, her arrest along with three other members of the EPC -- and the U.S. violation of international law, specifically the Vienna convention, that protects the sovereignty of all nation's diplomatic missions abroad.

2) Melvin Goodman, senior fellow at the Center for International Policy, adjunct professor of international relations at Johns Hopkins University. Goodman had a 42 year career in the Central Intelligence Agency, Department of State and at the Dept. of Defense's War College. He's the author of a number of books including, "A Whistleblower at the CIA: The Path of Dissent, and his latest American Carnage: The Wars of Donald Trump." He'll discuss the threat that rising tensions between the Trump administration and the government of Iran could lead to armed conflict between our two nations. He'll also assess the veracity of the intelligence reports re: an "Iranian threat" that John Bolton & Trump are using to justify the deployment of the aircraft carrier strike group and bomber task force to the Middle East.

3) Barbara Hudson Roberts, MD, was the first female adult cardiologist in the state of Rhode Island. As a resident at Yale New Haven Hospital, she became active in the pro-choice movement, before Roe v Wade made abortion legal. She helped found the Women’s National Abortion Action Coalition (WONAAC) and was the keynote speaker at the first national pro-choice demonstration in Washington DC in November 1971. Here she takes a critical look at the states across the U.S. now moving to impose harsh restrictions on abortion, and the disproportionate negative consequences for women of color and the economically disadvantaged. She'll also preview her forthcoming book, "The Doctor Broad: A Mafia Love Story."

4) Lynne Ide, Director of Program and Policy with the Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut will discuss the campaign now underway to establish a Public Option for healthcare insurance in Connecticut. She'll talk about the proposed plan, as well as the allies and opponents of the plan, and the legislature, Gov. Ned Lamont and insurance industry response.
