Episode: 09.24.18: Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses voter suppression and the Voting Rights Act; Kavanaugh SCOTUS nomination & sex abuse charges, Lawsuits re: voter purges nationwide; Socialist Action candidate ballot petition chaos
Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 - 10:00 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org
1) LaShawn Warren, senior vice president of campaigns and programs withThe Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights talks about her response to the recent report released by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights that unanimously concluded that the right to vote for many Americans is under attack, and that the U.S. Justice Dept. is not taking sufficient action to address this major failure of our democratic electoral system.
2) Marge Baker, Executive Vice President for Policy and Program with People For the American Way, discusses President Trump's Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court nomination in the face of accusations of sexual assault decades ago during a High School party -- and the response of the Republican controlled Senate in handling this charge, amid criticism of a long running misogynist culture among GOP Senators.
3) Investigative reporter Greg Palast whose film documentary, “The Best Democracy Money Can Buy,” examines Kansas Secretary of State and now candidate for Kansas governor Kris Kobach’s role in employing his Crosscheck system that wrongly purged some 1.1 million Americans of color from the voter rolls in the 2016 election. Greg talks about his current effort, along with civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, to sue Kobach and 26 Secretaries of State, almost all of them GOP voting officials, to get the names of those they’ve purged — and why. That opens the door to litigation and legislation to put this new Jim Crow operation out of the business.
4) Fred Linck, Socialist Action's candidate for U.S. Senate from Connecticut talks about the problems his Socialist Action party has encountered getting a fair count of petition signatures collected to place Fred on the ballot for U.S. Senate this November.
