Episode: 07.01.24 Counterpoint host Scott Harris discusses Julian Assange's release from prison & impact of plea deal; Calls for Joe Biden to step aside & find a new candidate; Threat of wider war between Israel & Hezbollah; Trump memos expose deep corruption

Counterpoint, hosted by Scott Harris, is heard every Monday night on WPKN 89.5 FM, Bridgeport, CT between 8:00 – 9:30 pm ET. Webstreaming and audio archive at http://wpkn.org

1) Kevin Gosztola, publisher of the Dissenter Newsletter and author of "Guilty of Journalism: The Political Case Against Julian Assange," discusses WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's agreement to plead guilty to a single charge of breaching the US Espionage Act, and his subsequent release from a U.K. prison. Kevin will examine what led to the deal made to free Assange, and how the precedent of the Assange case will likely effect press freedom in the years ahead.

2) Jeff Cohen, media critic, journalist, founder of Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting and co-founder of RootsAction.org, discusses his group's 2 year effort to convince Pres. Joe Biden to step aside in favor of another Democratic Party candidate which, after Biden's catastrophic debate performance has now culminated in widespread panic among Democrats, many of whom now agree the party must choose a new nominee to give the nation a better chance of defeating Donald Trump and his fascist agenda in the November election.

3) Jennifer Lowenstein, former Associate Director of Middle Eastern Studies and Senior Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, founder of the Madison-Rafah Sister City Project, and currently active in Jewish Voice for Peace-Tucson and the Arizona-Palestine Network. A freelance journalist and editor, she'll discuss her views on the threat of a wider war between Israel and Hezbollah, the urgent need for a ceasefire in Gaza, and the Biden administration's relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his extreme rightwing coalition government.

4) Timi Iwayemi, Research Director of the Governance team at the Revolving Door Project, talks about his group's "Trump Retrospective Memo" report, reminding listeners about the former president's "conflicted appointees who often prioritized corporate interests while jeopardizing the health, safety and wellbeing of the American people."
