Episode: Live Culture 11 with Martha Willette Lewis

Episode 11: Behind the Facade

This episode Martha is in discussion with Cyra Levenson, Curator of Education and Academic Outreach, at the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven. The BAC is currently slated to reopen this spring 2016. While the institution lies fallow, those working inside have not been idle. We take a look at what she has been up to and what is in store for us at the museum upon it's grand reopening.

This includes collaborations with The Yale School of Medicine, The American Studies Department at Yale, The Peabody Museum and The Smithsonian Institution, as well as scholars artists and thinkers from around the region. Drawing is central to her research, which has manifested itself in many forms, including a documentary film.

Live Culture catches up with her to discuss what she has been up to since curating the ground-breaking exhibit Figures of Empire: Slavery and Portraiture in Eighteenth Century Atlantic Britain, which ended just as the museum closed its doors for renovation in early 2015.

Martha's second guest is artist/curator Katie Vida to talk about her show Cut-Up: Contemporary Collage and Cut-Up Histories through a Feminist Lens, which has just opened up on January 16 and will be on through April 3, 2016.

She talks about the nature of this thought-provoking exhibition, which features work from 1967 to the present , and about what it is that makes this show seem so right for this moment in time. Franklin Street Works is a dynamic non-profit contemporary arts venue in Stamford, CT., which offers a vivid program of challenging exhibits on a regular basis.
